A cum laude graduate from the University of Stellenbosch, Carina Bruwer received the degree BMus (Hons), specializing in musical performance. In 2002, fresh from university, she started Five Seasons Entertainment, mainly as a vehicle through which she could promote the profiles of the various ensembles and productions she performed with. She soon realized that there was a significant demand for artist promotion amongst performers as well as potential clients, and she started taking on independent artist from various genres, soon boasting a roster of 500+ performers.
In 2015, Carina conceptualised an online platform that automates as a self-service, the process of negotiating, agreeing, contracting and paying live entertainers and acts to perform at events and venues. The groundbreaking platform (named Gigster Online) was launched in Beta during March 2016, announcing a new era in the live entertainment booking industry of South Africa and beyond.
In 2007, Carina also founded Sterling EQ – an all-woman instrumental group with a fresh fusion sound, packaged as a contemporary instrumental pop outfit, designed to bring instrumental music to a wider audience. She has been the executive producer of all 4 Sterling EQ’s releases which includes 3 audio CDs and a live DVD, winning three major awards (a SAMA, Ghoema and Huisgenoot Tempo Award) and gaining a strong worldwide following.
Through Carina’s vision, her tireless managerial efforts and her unique musical talent, Sterling EQ has changed the face of instrumental music in South Africa and beyond. The group has now performed in 11 countries, on 4 continents and to hundreds of thousands of people, and they continue to fly the South African flag high through their unique brand of instrumental pop music.
Through Five Seasons Entertainment she has invested significant resources in launching the Afro-operatic group “The Gugulethu Tenors”, who recently made their international debut, as well as supporting various other local acts by offering paid performance opportunities.
Carina’s business philosophy is that by not being motivated by profit exclusively, profit “happens”; with the emphasis being on quality and long-term sustainability. She believes the future of the entertainment industry lies in empowerment, and offers free consultation to selected performers who are serious about advancing their careers in an upside-down industry during these challenging economic times.
