Before she was a record-breaking open water swimmer and global speaker, Carina Bruwer was – and remains – a celebrated flute virtuoso with an international music career that spans genres, continents, and awards.

Carina is one of the most unique and versatile flautists in the world today, known for her groundbreaking slide flute technique, genre-defying style, and electric stage presence. With a BMus (Hons) cum laude and a UNISA Performer’s Licentiate (highest distinction), she combines classical mastery with a spirit of innovation.

As founder of Sterling EQ, Carina helped pioneer “instrumental pop” and led the all-woman trio to widespread success, with over 1,000 live shows in 15 countries, three major music awards (SAMA, Tempo, Ghoema), and international TV broadcasts to millions. She has also recorded on 12+ albums, performed as soloist with major orchestras, and directed crossover music productions that push the boundaries of the flute.

A lifetime in music

Carina Bruwer’s journey as a musician began in early childhood, evolving into a dynamic career that has spanned over two decades and multiple genres. From her early days as a classically trained flautist to becoming one of the most recognisable contemporary instrumentalists in South Africa, she has consistently pushed boundaries in both style and performance.

Carina has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious ATKV Muziq Category Prize, the Distell Music Award, and a Kanna Award nomination, along with a UNISA Performer’s Licentiate with highest distinction.
