SAMA Award-winning instrumental pop group Sterling EQ will be traveling to Spotorno in north-west Italy in October for a performance hosted by BeWater and SwimTheIsland, Europe’s largest open water swimming event, at which the trio’s sporty flautist Carina Bruwer will be the celebrity guest and event endorsee, as she again aims to swim triple race distance for child cancer.
“I AM GOING TO HAVE TO DIG DEEP; IT HAS BEEN A VERY BUSY YEAR AND SWIMMING 18KM IS OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE AT THE MOMENT, BUT I WANT TO DO THIS FOR THE LITTLE FIGHTERS CANCER TRUST – THE ORGANISATION, THE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES, KNOW A DIFFERENT REALITY THAN MOST OF US, AND MAKING A SMALL EFFORT LIKE THIS MAY JUST MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO THEM…” says Carina
Carina was the special invitee at last year’s event, where she also tripled the longest race distance of 6km, swimming 18km under her “Swim For Hope” project which supports the Little Fighters Cancer Trust, a South African organisation that supports children with cancer and their families.
Carina gave an intimate solo performance at the 2014 event, and with the 2015 version promising to be the largest ever with 1700 entrants plus their supporters and many spectators, the crowd will be treated to a full set by the multi award-winning Sterling EQ trio on the night before the main event.
n the main event day (11 October), Carina will have an early start to the 18km swim which is expected to take between 5 and 6 hours or more, conditions depending. Luca and Ariella will perform a few sets, whilst supporting Carina and encouraging fundraising efforts throughout the day.
“Swim the Island 2014 was one of the highlights of my year”, says Carina, “and I am beyond excited about this year’s event – it will be the first time that my swimming actually ‘shares a platform’ with the band, and that has been a dream of mine. It will also be our first time performing in Italy – even though we have quite a following there already – we can’t wait! And if everyone chips in, this can make a difference for the Little Fighters”
